European Union

The European Union (EU) is a political and economic union that was established in 1992 after the Treaty of Maastricht. It was created to stabilize the nations’ economies, promote labour migration through borders, and build collective progression towards a stronger and more unified Europe. Currently, its mandate is to promote peace, preserve EU values, and ensure justice and security. Currently, the EU consists of 27 member states that are bound by the union’s institutions in some areas of government. In particular, the EU follows the governing principle of a representative democracy as the union’s citizens are represented in the European Parliament, the EU’s legislative branch.

As displayed by its commitment to supporting developing nations and promoting environmental awareness, the EU has made significant contributions on the global stage. In 2020, the EU helped fund the Central Asia-South Asia Electricity Transmission Project which helps to increase access to electricity and improve living standards in the region. Moreover, in 2019, the EU ratified the Paris Agreement which established limitations on global CO2 emissions.

The EU is an intermediate committee that offers an experience for all delegates with interest.

Ruonan Zhao — Director
Currently a junior student, Ruonan is ecstatic to serve as the Director of the European Union of CAIMUN 2025. She was immediately captivated by the exhilarating debates in the committee rooms, developing a unique passion for the world of diplomacy and discussion. Gaining tremendous amounts of knowledge throughout her journey in MUN - from prevalent global conflicts, to the population density per square kilometer of Laos - Ruonan hopes to provide an unforgettable experience for the delegates of CAIMUN. Outside of MUN, Ruonan can be found actively stretching after playing badminton, or streaming songs by Jay Chou on repeat.

Yihang Li — Chair
Currently a junior at Dover Bay Secondary School, Yihang is honoured to be serving as the Chair of the European Union at CAIMUN 2025. Ever since stumbling upon her first conference in Grade 7, where she delivered a few rushed and barely audible sentences over Zoom, Yihang has cultivated a profound passion for the world of debate and diplomacy. MUN has left her with a plethora of unparalleled experiences, from fervent table knocking and late-night resolution writing to building cherished friendships. Outside of the committee room, Yihang can be found indulging in long strolls at the beach with her dog, delving into the latest scientific breakthroughs, and losing her voice while attempting to sing along to her Spotify playlist. Yihang looks forward to meeting everyone and witnessing a weekend of thought-provoking discussions!

Victor Zhang — Assistant Director
As a junior at Grandview Heights Secondary, Victor is enthusiastic to serve the role of Assistant Director for the European Union at CAIMUN 2025. His journey into the world of MUN began with an unprepared conference experience several years ago. Since then, he has developed an enduring passion for the activity. He loves the often heated (but civil) debates and the brilliant negotiations that transpire on the conference floor due to his experiences in competitive debate. Furthermore, Victor finds joy in fostering meaningful connections with both fellow staff members and delegates, dedicated to ensuring everyone will have an unforgettable experience. When he's not immersed in the world of MUN, you can find Victor dedicating hours to the gym, embracing the tumbles of rugby, and honing his saxophone skill.
