A Hospital in Crisis

Director: Dhruv Aggarwal — Committee Type: Crisis Committee

The sterile halls of Seattle Grace Hospital are anything but calm, cool, or collective. Behind all those white coats, a storm brews, with a crisis of ethics, politics, and humanity. Surgeons are stretched thin, interns are cracking under pressure, and every decision could mean the difference between life and death. Seattle Grace, the hospital that once symbolized excellence, now stands at a breaking point, facing questions not only of medicine but of morality itself.

As delegates, you will assume the roles of the physicians at Seattle Grace Hospital, including Meredith Grey and Derek Shepherd, along with Miranda Bailey and Richard Webber. Every one of you plays an essential part in the hospital’s complex network of authority, morality, and emotions. The outcomes for patients, careers, and the hospital depend on your actions. Your decisions will determine if innovation prevails over ethics, if empathy surpasses ambition, and if Seattle Grace can endure the turmoil threatening to dismantle it.

  • When resources are limited, how do you decide who gets to live? With emergency rooms overcrowded and budgets slashed, Seattle Grace faces impossible choices. Should scarce funds go to groundbreaking experimental procedures that may save a few, or toward the everyday patients who fill the emergency room beds? Should these new interns be given hands-on opportunities if it risks the safety and lives of patients, or should experience come second to the preservation of life? In this topic, delegates must discover the fine line between innovation and irresponsibility, compassion and compromise as the hospital teeters between its moral duty to heal and its need to survive.

  • Beyond the walls of Seattle Grace, challenges ripple across Seattle and the entire state of Washington. The media’s harsh eyes, malpractice suits piling up, and controversy of partnering with private corporations for the survival of the hospital are amid. Should the hospital partner with private corporations like the Harper Avery Foundation to secure funding and keep the hospital running, or fight for universal public healthcare and government support? How can a hospital balance reputation with responsibility? In this topic, delegates must navigate the intersection of policy, politics and public perception to decide how Seattle Grace will represent itself in a time of crisis.
