United Nations Human Rights Council

Committee Description

The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) was formed in 2006 by the United Nations General Assembly, in place of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights—a UN body that had experienced widespread backlash for its member states’ poor adherence to international human rights standards. Today, the UNHRC is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, with the purpose of upholding fundamental human rights across the global stage. The United Nations General Assembly is responsible for electing the council’s member states.

The UNHRC examines alleged human rights violations in UN member states in accordance with a variety of international human rights conventions. By employing special rapporteurs and working groups, the UNHRC is able to create detailed reports available to the general public and begin inquiries into human rights abuses in individual countries.

The UNHRC is an intermediate committee that offers an experience for all delegates with interest.
