Position Paper Guidelines

Position papers are short articles that outline a country’s position on topics discussed in committee. Position papers encourage delegates to conduct research and prepare for the conference by organizing their stances. At TMUN 2026, delegates in all committees, including Crisis Committees, must submit a position paper to qualify for awards (except Ad Hoc). In addition, each committee will give out one Best Position Paper award. In General Assemblies and Specialized Agencies, delegates are encouraged to prioritize academic rigour in their papers; one such example would be to leverage statistics to emphasize certain stances. In Crisis Committees, delegates may use their position paper to outline both their public and private plans of action for success in both debate and crisis actions.

Position papers must be 1 page at a minimum, and 2 or 3 pages at a maximum for committees with 2 or 3 topics, respectively, and written in an 11 or 12 pt. font, single-spaced. An additional bibliography/citations page (which does not count towards the page limit) should be added in MLA style, as well as per-page footnotes. Delegates should include their committee, country/character, name, and delegation (if applicable) in their position paper, and break up their paper by topic.

It is recommended to refer to the content and questions in your background guide as a starting point to formulate ideas. Although the use of artificial intelligence may aid in the research process, position papers must be written in the original words of the delegate — the use of generative AI or otherwise plagiarizing work may result in disqualification from awards.

Position papers are due March 26th, 2026, 11:59 PM EST. For deadline extensions or other questions regarding position papers, please contact support@tmun.ca and CC your director's email, which can be found in your background guide.
